Elk River Gorge

The Elk River Gorge is an incredible watershed flowing from the Grandfather Mountain region of North Carolina, with it’s headwaters near Beech Mountain.  There are a couple of sections of whitewater to paddle as the river cascades off the Blue Ridge highlands, but we focused our attention on the main gorge downstream of Big Falls to the confluence of the Watauga River, near Rt. 321.

Along the way, there were a number of exciting bed rock rapids, including one large portage around Twisting Falls and a dramatic end of the gorge with the 30 foot Compression Falls.  We brought the cameras with us and documented the trip for  Green River Games.  Check it out!
