RETRO in “Boarders” Magazine
Ben Moore surprised us the other day with issue No. 7 of Boarders Magazine. Ben, co-organizer of RETRO Day, was invited by this Texas based publication to write an article about the annual grassroots event here on the James River. RETRO is a whitewater celebration in Richmond that has been going strong for almost a decade, highlighting the beginning of the “real” whitewater season and the paddlers who call this city’s sacred waters “home.” For this Boarders publication, they sent one of their photographers to document Ben & his Stand Up Paddling (SUP) crew surfing down the James.
What’s cool about Boarders is their focus on numerous grassroots paddling scenes across the globe and the local athletes who produce them. Their moto is “Surf Within” – which fits RETRO & SUP on the James so elegantly. The Falls in Richmond is home to year round whitewater SUP, with Ben as the sport’s front man. I can’t think of anyone more passionate about the local whitewater here in Richmond than this tall, blonde man. Ever since I met Ben, he has always wanted to bring the surfing lifestyle to the river and SUP has brought that dream to reality. He is eager to teach and share his love for the river with everyone and anyone who shows interest. It’s a rare day that you don’t see this SUP ambassador on the James, taking multiple laps.
We are proud to see Ben in this beautiful publication and enjoyed reading his take on RETRO. Check it out!
